Sheriff’s office, JPD conduct special Traffic Enforcement Project

The Greene County sheriff’s office and the Jefferson police department conducted special Traffic Enforcement Projects (sTEP) Nov. 25-Dec. 1.

On Nov. 27, they worked together at a safety checkpoint on Highway 30 near the intersection of Highway 4. Vehicles were directed off Highway 30 into an empty parking lot. While one officer checked the driver’s license, registration and insurance card, another office walked around the vehicle checking that all lights worked properly. More than 50 vehicles were checked; the most frequent citation during the check was for failure to have insurance.

The sheriff’s office responded to one personal injury accident and did four vehicle assists during the sTEP. One driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated.

Deputies wrote citations as follows: speed, nine; no insurance, six; and move over violations, two.

Deputies issued warnings as follows: seatbelt, one; speed, 18; driving while suspended, one; registration violation, one; dark windows, one; other traffic violations, one; equipment violations, three; no insurance, six; and move over violations, one.

Jefferson police officers investigated seven accidents during the sTEP, wrote 15 citations and issued 79 warnings.  Citations were as follows: speed, three; improper passing, one; driving while suspended or revoked, one; registration violations, two; dark windows, one; and other traffic violations, six.

JPD officers issued warnings as follows: seat belt usage, six; speed, 14; stop sign/light violations, three; driving without a license, two; registration violations, 14; open container of alcohol, four; dark windows, two; other traffic violations, nine; equipment violations, 15; and no proof of insurance, 10.

The next sTEP will be March 14-17.
